Important

Most days we will have reached capacity for urgent queries by 10am and will only be able to accept routine and administrative queries for the rest of the day. In this event we will direct all urgent queries to 111 for rest of the day. In this event, please see our out of hours information.

Urgent Medical Appointment

We regret to inform you that no more urgent medical appointments are available today. Should you feel you require an urgent medical appointment, then please call 111 or go to 111 online

In an emergency, please call 999.

Alternatively, please go to your Urgent Treatment Centre located at The Royal London Hospital’s Cavell Entrance on Stepney Way E1 1FR.

Conditions that can be treated at the Urgent Treatment Centre

The Tower Hamlets Urgent Treatment Centre is equipped to diagnose and deal with many of the most common ailments people attend A&E for, including: 

  • Strains and sprains
  • Minor head injuries
  • Cuts and grazes
  • Bites and stings
  • Mild burns
  • Skin infections and rashes
  • Coughs and colds
  • Abdominal pain
  • and many other non-life-threatening issues

Ways to book

  1. The quickest way to make an appointment is through our online consultation tool. You will be asked six basic questions regarding your query. Please answer as fully as possible to ensure you are provided with appropriate care.
  2. Alternatively, please telephone: 020 7510 4000. Our team will ask you the same six questions and enter them into the online consultation tool on your behalf.

For those who would prefer additional privacy, we encourage use of the online consultation tool.

Please note that you will be provided with the plan for your care following review by a clinician and not during the call to the reception team member.

Blood Test Requests

Please note blood tests can only be requested by a clinician. If you feel you need a blood test, please make an online enquiry or call the practice on 020 7510 4000 after midday.

Sickness Certificates (Fit Notes)

You must give your employer a doctor's 'fit note' (sometimes called a 'sick note') if you've been ill for more than 7 days in a row and have taken sick leave. This includes non-working days, such as weekends and bank holidays.

Home Visits

Please be aware that our triage team will always call to assess the home visit request first.

If you need a home visit, you can help us by calling reception before 10am.

Home visits are only available for patients who are registered on our list as housebound.

Please remember that several patients can be seen in the practice in the time that it takes to make one home visit. There are also better facilities for examining and treating patients at the Health Centre.

Text Message Reminders

At the The Barkantine Practice, we send patients texts to remind you of your appointments, tell you about your normal test results, self-care initiatives and send emails to invite you to our patient participation groups. 

We feel this is important and part of our job in looking after your health.

We do not share your contact details or use it for marketing or commercial use. Ever!

If you still feel uncomfortable in allowing us to contact you for health purposes, please let our reception team or GP know, and we will make sure we respect your wishes.

Change or Cancel an Appointment

Please give us as much notice as possible so we can offer your appointment to someone else.

Out of Hours

Life Threatening

Call 999 or go to A&E now if:

 
  • you or someone you know needs immediate help
  • you have seriously harmed yourself - for example, by taking a drug overdose

A mental health emergency should be taken as seriously as a medical emergency.
